The Italian Chapel

The Italian Chapel

An architectural wonder and closely linked to Orkney Cheddar. It was built by the Italian prisoners of war who were stationed on the island, along with 60,000 servicemen and woman, who all fed daily on Orkney dairy products during their stay. When they left, the island was left with a surplus so the farmers made a cheddar cheese. The same milk that fuelled these great craftsmen also goes into Orkney Cheddar today.
